We spent seven years enduring not only my husband’s cancer diagnosis, but also the horrific lack of continuity and communication that is extremely prevalent at MD Anderson. And to add insult to injury, no one is held accountable for this ignorance. They all just talk about each other, you know as good cop, bad cop. Be very careful when approaching this facility for your cancer needs. Record every word spoken, because it will change minute to minute, with ZERO recollection from the source that spoke it. It’s a scary place, so don’t go in there alone, have a patient advocate with you, and a caregiver that will be your extra set of eyes and ears. There are many many stories like mine, and I promise you, protect yourself. They are a very poorly managed business with an incredibly broken system. Pay attention, because they aren’t.

I watched my Dad die at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. It was awful. I wanted to share a bit about the experience in hopes that other people can have better experiences. MD Anderson touts itself as “the Best Cancer Center in the World.” But it is not. Dad was failed by Dr. Ashish Kamat and his entire team. Worst of all by his PA, Robert Ramage. I implore other families to think twice before entrusting your loved ones to this team’s care. But there were others who are culpable. The entire culture of this hospital is “cancerous.” Over an agonizing year of treatment and mistreatment, a catastrophic failure in care at the hands of MD Anderson cost my Dad his life. That failure began in November of 2023, and culminated with Dad’s shocking death in a cramped, post-opp room on the 5th floor of your Oncology building, just a few weeks short of his birthday. Dad would have been 79 this past New Years Day. Dad deserved so much better. He truly was the most likeable, loveable person. Dad’s death was an ugly scene. Something I don’t wish on anyone. Watching someone you love suddenly taken from you is traumatic enough. But compounding that pain by witnessing a complete breakdown in procedure, a complete deficit of know-how, and a complete absence of urgency from the MD Anderson Staff was unconscionable. The lack of training, professionalism, and empathy on display at MD Anderson that Tuesday morning was shocking. And heartbreaking. But it was consistent with that my Dad and our family experienced over the past 12 months. I wrote a letter to Peter Pisters, which you can find at a new website my family and I created, called patientsforchange.com. Please read it and please help us do all we can to ensure every patient is treated like family. Sending prayers and love to you all. 🙏❤️

My Aunt was dying and I wasnt allowed in the room because I wasnt "immediate family" even though I was the one taking care of her! I didnt get my last goodbyes.. SHE SUFFERED, the nurses did nothing, and I couldnt be there! never again... never ever again... one of her nurses was also very rude! Gosh I wish I couldve remembered her name with some of the comments she was making she almost got slugged! I am beyond furious!

It’s much easier to talk to your president than to talk to your doctor. They stopped my father’s treatment after 3 chemo cycles because of some missing information from the health plan. The only thing they care about is money .

Not only the best in the nation for cancer treatment but also remarkable for patient care, not only from our doctors but every staff member we’ve encountered.

Great experience, very courteous staff and the doctor was awesome.

A family member is being treated at MD Anderson for breast cancer. She has to fly in every week from Dallas for her treatments. The doctors are great. The problem is with how poorly the staff coordinate with the patients and with other departments. Patients flying in from out of town for treatment need to have everything scheduled on one day (chemo, blood work, x rays, CT scans, MRI's). Despite being repeatedly told this, staff in radiology and oncology don't seem able to perform basic tasks, are completely inefficient, and don't listen to patients. They repeatedly schedule tests on any day of the week, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the patient is not local. Patients have to constantly call in and remind different departments that they are coming in from out of town for tests. It adds far too much stress to patients already under a lot of stress dealing with their cancer treatments. Why is this even an issue? Staff need to be more competent, learn how to perform their tasks more efficiently, and communicate with patients more effectively. As it stands, the staff at MD Anderson do not act like they are part of a world class treatment centre, but an inefficient and clumsy hospital unable to get basic things right. This kind of treatment of patients is unacceptable.

I've now made three trips to MD Anderson Hospital. As a stage 4 pancreatic cancer patient, outside of my family, time is my most valuable asset. So, why take that precious time and write a Google review? Because this place deserves it. There are so many impressive things about this organization. Technology is one. They use it everywhere and use it well. Communication with the patient is amazing via technology. I can go in and do a blood test and by the time I get off the elevator for the next appointment, the results will be coming into MyChart. They coordinate between departments incredibly well. They scheduled 8 different appointments and procedures for me in one day. They also run more phase 1 clinical trials than any other hospital in the world. But the thing that makes the biggest difference is their people. Staff, nurses, physicians, front desk, security officers. Whomever you run into, they help you. If you are lost, they walk you to your appointment. I don't know if they will cure me, but the experience has been wonderful.
