Dr. Hosam is a Consultant Obstetrician, Gynecologist, and Urologist. He worked for 20 years in the NHS in the United Kingdom after obtaining his CCST as a Consultant Gynecologist with known expertise in the management of high-risk pregnancy, complex benign gynecology, and early-stage gynecological cancer. He worked as a Consultant and the Lead Urogynecologist at Sussex Healthcare Trust, where he has been practicing since 2004. Dr. Hosam has a special interest in prolapse, urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction (fertility preservation surgery), menorrhagia, and minimally invasive laparoscopic and hysteroscopic gynecological surgery (for abnormal bleeding, pelvic masses, and pelvic pain). He established an integrated multidisciplinary urogynecology team across the trust. He had led the obstetrics and gynecology department as a clinical director to attain national British Society of Urogynecology accreditation. He has extensive clinical and surgical expertise to manage urinary incontinence, frequency, urgency, and recurrent cystitis and to perform pelvic reconstructive surgery for incontinence and uterovaginal prolapse. A subjective retrospective audit of his continence surgery showed a success rate of 86% and a success rate of prolapsed surgery of 91%. He is also interested in the management of sexual dysfunction, including vaginal corrective surgery. Dr. Hosam was chosen to be a Member of the International Urogynecology Association’s Publication Committee, and he was also the Editor of the expert corner in the IUGA newsletter. Earlier, he was Visiting Fellow in Gynecological Oncology, Royal Brisbane Hospital & Royal Women’s Hospital, Queensland, Australia and Royal Northshore Hospital Sydney, Australia. During the early part of Dr. Abu’s career, he had worked as Specialist Registrar and as Senior House Officer in OBGYN in the UK as well.As for Dr. Jafaru Abu’s educational background; he was a brilliant academic performer throughout his studies and qualified in the profession with excellent undergraduate and post-graduate medical qualifications. After gaining his first degree in Medicine, MBBS from the University of Benin Medical School, Nigeria, Dr. Abu moved to the United Kingdom where he undertook all of his postgraduate training and qualified as a member (and later a Fellow) of the Royal College of Obstetricians& Gynecologists, UK, (MRCOG, FRCOG) and also gained the BSCCP Accreditation from the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. During his Specialist training years, Dr. Abu obtained a double qualification, firstly, he was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in OBGYN from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, UK, and secondly, another Certificate of Completion of Sub-specialty Training in Gynecological Oncology awarded byThe Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, UK, to add to his portfolio of qualifications.Dr. Abu was also a Visiting Fellow to the Centre of for Gynecological Cancers and Minimally Invasive Surgery, Royal Brisbane Hospital & Royal Women’s Hospital, Queensland, Australia and The Royal Northshore Hospital Sydney, Australia in 2005. He was appointed as a Consultant Gynecological Oncology Surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals in 2006, one of UK’s biggest Teaching Hospitals, where he led a major transformation in the surgical management of gynecological cancers by pioneering the introduction of several surgical procedures. He was instrumental in the introduction of minimally invasive procedures (keyhole operations) in the management of cancers of the womb, cervix (neck of the womb) and early stages of ovarian cancer. Dr. Abu is well renowned for his exceptional ability to perform complex key-hole procedures both laparoscopically and with the DaVinciRobot. He was one of the first gynecologists in the UK to perform Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS), a “scarless” procedure.Dr. Abu is also well known for performing extensive surgery for advanced stages of ovarian cancer and led the Department of Gynecological Oncology at Nottingham University Hospital, UK, to become an Accredited Advanced Ovarian Cancer Cytoreductive Surgical Centre by The European Society of Gynecological Oncologists (ESGO). He was the Head of Gynecological Oncology at Nottingham University Hospitals, UK, until he joinedthe VPS Healthcare. Committed to the training of other consultants, he established the Annual Nottingham Advanced Laparoscopic Training Course for gynecology consultants across the United Kingdom in 2008 where he trained and mentored other consultant colleagues as well as Senior Trainees to acquire the skills needed for safe advanced laparoscopic surgery in women. The Masterclass course became very popular across Europe. He also teaches advanced laparoscopic surgical skills as a member of an international faculty of experts in IRCAD Minimally Invasive Surgical Training Centre in Strasbourg, France.
