Assoc. Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Alexander W. Hauswirth is a specialist in internal medicine with an additional specialist qualification in haemato-oncology at JUVENIS Medical Center in central Vienna. He is also lead senior physician (Leitender Oberarzt) of the Departments of Haematology/Haemostaseology and Oncology at the Clinic for Internal Medicine I, Medical University of Vienna / AKH Vienna — Austria's largest hospital — where he has held that role since 2010.

He qualified as a specialist in internal medicine and was awarded the venia docendi in 2010, and in 2012 was appointed Associate Professor at the Medical University of Vienna. He completed his additional specialist qualification in haemato-oncology in 2014. Clinical focus

  • Internal medicine
  • Haematology, haemostaseology and oncology, with personalised management
  • Blood disorders — anaemias including iron deficiency, leukaemias, and diseases of the lymph nodes: both investigation and treatment
  • Blood clotting disorders, and problems arising during treatment with blood thinners
  • Pre-operative clearance — assessing whether a patient is medically fit for surgery
  • Health and prevention
  • Sports medicine in patients with cancer
  • Palliative care

Why a haematologist matters when something is unexplained Many people are sent for a blood specialist not because they have cancer, but because something in a blood test does not add up — persistent anaemia, an unexplained swollen lymph node, a clotting result that looks wrong, or difficulty managing blood-thinning medication. Working out what is behind those findings, and what is not, is precisely what haematology does. Dr. Hauswirth leads the department that does this work at Austria's largest university hospital, and sees patients privately at JUVENIS.

Pre-operative clearance for surgery in Vienna Dr. Hauswirth also carries out OP-Freigaben — the medical assessment that confirms a patient is fit to undergo an operation. For patients travelling to Vienna for surgery this is a practical advantage: the internal-medicine assessment, including any blood-clotting or anticoagulation questions, can be handled at the same centre.

Languages Dr. Hauswirth treats patients in German and English.
